You will need to take out health insurance for your enrolment and studies. We strongly recommend that you choose a German statutory health insurance (GKV).

Even if you can or want to be exempted from compulsory insurance, you must contact a GKV. They will check your insurance cover and can exempt you from compulsory insurance if necessary.

With a GKV, you have very good insurance cover. The health insurance companies pay for

  • General practitioner visits
  • Dental care
  • Preventive medical check-ups
  • Hospitalisation
  • Care during and after pregnancy
  • Treatment for serious illnesses.
